West Indies School of Theology: A Legacy of Training Christian Leaders
Founded in 1946 by missionaries of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC), the West Indies School of Theology (WIST) in Trinidad was established to train pastors for ministry throughout the Caribbean. In 1954, the School moved to its permanent campus at Fourth Bridge, Maracas Valley.
Following the establishment of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the West Indies (PAWI) as an independent body in 1966, WIST’s leadership transitioned to Caribbean nationals, with all its presidents being graduates of the institution.
Over the years, WIST has expanded beyond pastoral training to offer programmes in evangelism, missions, counselling, Christian education, leadership, social work, psychology, computing, and other disciplines. Its student population has grown from just six in 1946 to an average of 250 students in recent years, representing churches across the Caribbean and beyond.
WIST graduates serve in churches and ministries worldwide, with many leading congregations throughout the PAWI fellowship. The School also provides certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate opportunities through its main campus, extension schools, and online programmes.
Today, WIST continues its mission of equipping Christian leaders for effective ministry. It is registered with the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT), and its programmes are approved by the Council. The institution also maintains membership in regional theological and educational associations, reflecting its ongoing commitment to Christian education and leadership development.
